2016 Stratus Riesling

The 2016 Stratus Riesling strikes a perfect balance of energy, elegance, and maturity. It opens with zesty lime, lemon curd, apricot, and yellow plum, layered with custard, honey, and beeswax for a touch of richness.

As it unfolds, flinty minerality and a hint of gunsmoke appear, alongside the evocative scent of concrete after summer rain. The palate is plush yet precise, with vibrant citrus, baked apple, and a salty lift that keeps it fresh.

A bright acidity carries through to a long, lemon drop and grapefruit finish. Smooth, complex, and seriously drinkable—this Riesling hits all the right notes.

The 2016 vintage will be long remembered for its ideal conditions. Winter was mild and dry with a late April snowfall delaying bud break ever so slightly. A warm and dry spring, especially during flowering, led to even cluster development. Dry conditions continued from May through mid-August, making it one of the driest summers on record. The warm days stimulated an early veraison that led to wonderful potential ripening for all varietals. Occasional but heavy late August rains were quickly absorbed without any negative impact. Everything was harvested relatively early by Stratus standards, with the first Chardonnay for sparkling picked in late August and the last of the Cabernet Sauvignon in mid-November. Outstanding quality and anticipated yields were achieved this vintage.
