2017 Stratus Blanc de Blancs

A gorgeous expression of Niagara Chardonnay, this Blanc de Blancs delights with fine, persistent bubbles and a luminous golden hue. The 2017 growing season began with above-average winter temperatures and lower-than-normal snowfall. Spring arrived on schedule, with bud break occurring during the week of May 8. Cool, damp conditions followed through much of the season, although flowering in mid-June was relatively uniform and successful.

Throughout the summer, cooler-than-average temperatures and persistent moisture required careful vineyard management. Extensive cluster thinning and leaf plucking were employed to optimize fruit exposure and concentration, ensuring the development of high-quality grapes despite the challenging conditions.

A dramatic shift in weather arrived in September and continued through October, which proved to be the warmest in a decade. Growing degree days increased significantly, allowing the fruit to achieve optimal ripeness later in the season. Ideal harvest conditions persisted through November, enabling extended hang time and the development of balanced flavour, acidity, and phenolic maturity.

Following a long, warm, and dry autumn, a sudden cold snap in mid-December created perfect conditions for an early Icewine harvest, bringing the 2017 vintage to a successful close.
